1. The role of British culture in the world can’t be overestimated. British painting, literature and theatre are world famous. This year, 2014, was announced to be "А Year of British Culture in Russia". A lot of events take place all around the country and especially in Moscow: “Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style”, “Challenging Boundaries: Breakthroughs in British Art, 1988–1998”, “Northern Ireland Opera – The Turn of the Screw” and other photo exhibitions, film festivals, concerts, etc. It inspired us to devote our creative project to the most glorious aspect of English culture – theatre, in fact to the way English drama and literature are presented on the stage of the leading theatres of Moscow, such as the Moscow Art Theatre, the Taganka Theatre, the Moscow Drama Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin, the Moscow Sovremennik Theatre, etc.
English dramatic art left significant imprint in theatre development history. Originated in the depths of medieval culture it has been influenced by such greats as Shakespeare, Wilde, Beaumont and Fletcher.
We analyzed the repertoire of 14 theatres of Moscow and found a lot of English plays there.
In most theatres you can see the plays by Shakespeare*: "Hamlet" (Gogol Centre, the Theatre of Nations), “Romeo and Juliet” (The Moscow Art Theatre named after M. Gorky), “Romeo and Juliet”, “Othello”, “King Lear” (The Satirikon Theatre), “The Twelfth Night” (The Taganka Theatre), "Much Ado About Nothing", "Measure for Measure" (The Moscow Drama Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin), "The Tempest" ("Et cetera" Theatre), "The Taming of the Shrew" (The Theatre of Satire, the Theatre of Nations).
The plays based on the English classical literature have proved to be not less popular: “An Ideal Husband” (The Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov), “The School for Scandal” (The Moscow Art Theatre named after M. Gorky).
Hardly any contemporary theatre can do without the famous English detective story. Agatha Christy is one of the most popular authors: “Witness for the Prosecution” (The Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov, the Theatre for Young Spectators), “Spider’s Web” (The Moscow Art Theatre named after M. Gorky).
There are also a lot of plays for children, such as “Peter Pan” at the Theatre for Young Spectators and “The Cat That Walked by Himself” at the RAYT.
We found some modern plays of English playwrights as well: “Noises Off” (The Mossovet State Academic Theatre), “The Cripple of Inishmaan” (The Taganka Theatre).
The students of our group decided to see the way English plays are staged at these theatres and share our opinions, advise what is worth seeing and what is not. All in all we have seen 15 plays that represent all the categories mentioned above:
• English classics
• detective stories
• plays for children
• modern plays
*We decided not to focus on the way the plays by Shakespeare are staged. We believe it is a subject of another project (to the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth)
“The Pickwick Club”
Let us start by considering the positive and negative sides of the play “The Pickwick Club” based on Charles Dickens’s novel “The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club” (The Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov).
The first thing that needs to be said is that the play has lost its original full name. It’s just “The Pickwick Club” – nothing bad. The short name is easier and people know that it makes no odds.
The reasons to watch it. The cast was not bad. Alexander Semchev played the leading part. He played his role very well, I think. But the best actors were Igor Khripunov as Samuel Weller and Yuri Chursin as Alfred Jingle. They are just real professionals. The other actors overacted sometimes. I think it was because of emotions. The theatre was full and they might have been nervous. One more positive point is the fact that the action was accompanied by the Beatles songs. The final song “All You Need Is Love” made up for many negative points which I want to point out as well.
Firstly, the sets were very simple, nothing special. The main decoration was a red double-decker bus. It was a vehicle, a restaurant, a house, and finally it was a wall. It seemed to be out of place. Secondly, the beginning was a little bit strange and boring. First 15–20 minutes I could not understand what was going on. Thirdly, as we know, “The Pickwick Club” is a comedy. Only Weller’s jokes and Jingle’s actions were really funny. The others tried to look funny, to make the audience laugh but they looked silly. As a result I can say: you can watch it because of some jokes, Beatles songs and if you are keen on typically English buses! It isn’t the best play of the Moscow Art Theatre.
“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”
Let us go on to the next play. Robert Louis Stevenson – “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” (The Mossovet State Academic Theatre). The title sounds interesting and a little bit mysterious. But the play gave me nothing but disappointment.
The tragedy is that it’s not just a play. It’s a musical play. It was quite unexpected as it hadn’t been announced anywhere. If I had known, it is a musical I would have chosen another play.
The all-star cast had to be superb, you would suppose, because such actors as Alexander Domogarov, Ekaterina Guseva and Anastasia Makeeva are very famous and other characters are minor. Indeed, the girls were amazing! Their voices and figures were wonderful, mimicry and gestures were also splendid. You look at them with the greatest pleasure.
And there is Domogarov… I don’t understand people who are fond of him. Now he is advanced in years and has put on weight. He is no longer a slim young man and doesn’t look as attractive as he used to. The worst thing is his voice, namely articulation. I couldn’t understand a word when he was singing.
The first act lasted for an hour and a half, and it seemed to be just eternity. I had to wait for some interesting actions for one hour. By the end of first act I had got a terrible headache and decided to go home. It was a waste of time and I was so sorry that I had wasted money on it. Later I read some reviews and a lot of people were dissatisfied.
I can’t recommend this abominable musical play. If you are a true fan of Domogarov no matter what, it’s for you. The play has little to do with Stevenson’s novel which is dark and full of mean.
There was the only one thing I liked. The square in front of the theatre was very nice: the trees were decorated with tinsel and lights. It reminded me that Christmas was coming.
Do not be put off by my criticism, there are many more classical plays you can watch. For example, a play by Oscar Wilde “An Ideal Husband” in the MTA named after A.P. Chekhov and “The Importance of Being Earnest” in the SDART. Also the MTA named after M. Gorky stages a play by Richard Sheridan “The School for Scandal”. Maybe they are better. And of course, all the plays by William Shakespeare. They are almost at every theatre in Moscow.
“The Witness for the Prosecution”
The curtain goes up and there is London in front of you. It is constantly raining, every passerby is trying to avoid getting wet and opens umbrellas. Umbrellas and the red telephone booth play a symbolic role in the play. Thick fog slowly creeps from the banks of the Thames to the dark streets. This is the way the art-director of the Theatre for Young Spectators S. Barkhin and the director of the performance H. Yanovskaya see the place where Agatha Christie’s “The Witness for the Prosecution” takes place. The play is very “englishlike”, it’s the general impression it makes on the audience.
The plot is classical: a mysterious murder, unexpected twists of the plot and even more unexpected ending. The performance is truly English: in style and irony.
I found the actors talented and I really enjoyed the music and dances.
Although the performance seemed rather slow at the beginning, after the interval it was really breath-taking and I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage.
If it were not a detective, I would describe the plot, but it must be intriguing. The final dance showed all the emotions the characters and audience experienced: anger, despair, passion, love. If you want to feel it, come to see the play at the Young Spectator’s Theatre with marvelous Igor Yasulovich staring.
My theme was the English detective stories. I chose three stories by Agatha Christie because I like this genre and her works in particular. All productions were made in different ways. Each theater showed its own view.
“The Witness for the Prosecution”
The first play was “The Witness for the Prosecution” at the Theatre for Young Spectators. It is the two-act play produced by H. Yanovskaya. At the first sight the story is simple, one man is suspected of murdering but his wife’s evidence gave him an alibi but then she changes her statement and became the witness for the prosecution. Among the advantages I note the actress who played the main heroine (O. Demidova), the background which consisted of umbrellas and also the music and costumes were good. Unfortunately the play has a big disadvantage, it is repeating. Characters plow the sand during the first minutes, it’s boring and irritating. Insertion with dancing and music helped the cheers but general impression was spoiled a bit. Moreover, my opinion is that this play is not intended for children younger than 14. With us in the hall there were many children aged from 5 to 10 years old. Being noisy they disturb other spectators. To sum it up it’s a rather poor production and it must have been more lively.
“The Spider’s Web”
Let’s go on with “The Spider’s Web”. You can see this play at the Theater named after M. Gorky. Directed, staged & produced by A. Semenov. Set & costume design: V. Barabanov. The Sound design: S. Konkin. Running time: 1,5 hrs. The plot: once in a country house a woman finds a corps of her enemy, she thinks it was her daughter in law who killed him and she starts the game that could save her. As for me I think this play consists of pluses! Stage was small and so close that you feel like in their living room, fantastic atmosphere! The production was really brilliant and acting was so wonderful especially L. Golubina who played the main heroine. I highly recommended to visit that play for everyone because it is short but very interesting.
“Agatha Christie. Detective” (“Go Back for Murder”)
The last play is “Agatha Christie. Detective”, it is based on “Go Back for Murder” at the Moscow Dramatic Theatre "Aparte". Duration is the same as the first play. The director is A. Lyubimov. If you saw a detective serial about Hercule Poirot you may know this story. All starts when a young lady goes to a detective and asks him to investigate her mother’s case. The main actions take place in the past but unlike the origin “the past” in the play is mid-80s, hippie era. The scenery was unusual, instead of walls they used a large rotating screens with changing pictures. I think that modern view at classic is attractive and it is giving new horizons for rejuvenate old plays and create new. But location of the theater is a problem. We spent about 20 min. trying to find it and if you are not familiar with the area you may have problems. I believe young people will appreciate this play so if you ask me to go or not to go I’ll tell you to go.
In conclusion, I can say that that project was enjoyable and informative. My companion and I had a good time and were not averse to repeat it again.

Plays for Children
I have seen three plays for children: “Secrets of the Wardrobe”, “Prince Caspian” by C.S. Lewis at the Theatre on Malaya Bronnaya, and “The Treasure Island” by R.L. Stevenson at the Moscow Drama Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin.
“Secrets of the Wardrobe”
On the whole there were much more minuses than pluses.
On the positive side, I can appreciate the work with the audience, it makes the performance more interesting for children. Colorful sets and many beautiful songs are another advantage.
Special effects, of course, cannot be compared with the film. Regrettably, many magical things, which are in the book, were unnecessarily omitted.
What is more, I discovered that one of the main characters, Susan, was not in the play at all. It seemed a huge drawback.
The costumes in this performance were very strange (4 blue squirrels, 2 pink beavers and blue elk).
The play has been on since December 27, 2007. I got an impression that in the six years the director had not bothered to watch the movie or read the book attentively. Apparently he read summaries, but still not attentively. I think that it is very bad.
The theatre claims that this performance is for children over 7 years old. I think this show is for preschoolers who have not read the book or watched the movie.
If you want to see a good edition of the book, just watch the movie. It will be much more interesting.
The next performance was “Prince Caspian” based on C.S. Lewis novel at the same theatre. I really hoped it would be better. It did not meet my expectations either.
Of course, in this performance there were also good points, but they were exactly the same as in the “Secrets of the Wardrobe”, namely: interaction with the audience, colorful decorations (I want to note that they were more interesting and original) and a beautiful song (it was one for entire show).
But here the disadvantages also outnumbered the pluses. Strange costumes were there again (blue badger, blue squirrel, green mouse and red bear).
As the “Prince Caspian” is a continuation of “Secrets of the Wardrobe”, the main characters are the same, but many minor characters are added. The Difference between the performance and the book was still giant again, and seemed to have become even greater: King Miraz who was killed in the book, in the play was just kicked out of Narnia, and forest awoke by itself, though in the book it was awakened. Such deviations from the text do not seem justified.
This play came out on December 20, 2009. Perhaps the playwright had read the book, but either did not understand it or could not read to the end, and decided that he could do with the text whatever he wanted.
In both performances actors were not very natural. Maybe children did not see it but parents could not but notice.
The emphasis, as it seemed to me, was made on the preschoolers who have not read the book or watched the movie.
The Theatre on Malaya Bronnaya rarely puts on plays for children. I think it is very noticeable. Directors do not understand how to make children’s performances.
If you want to show the kids something about Narnia, show them films.
“The Treasure Island”
The third and final performance for me was “The Treasure Island” by R.L. Stevenson at the Pushkin Theatre. The play has been on since 1989. The novel “The Treasure Island” is so popular that it seems it cannot be spoilt. But everything is possible!
I never thought that a play can be so boring and long. All songs in the play were a soundtrack. It was very noticeable. Even a child next to me said this to his grandmother.
The sets were just two towers, which turned into the tavern, the ship, the house on the island, and the rocks on the island.
As a positive thing I can mention only the costumes and the hero named “Parrot”. He was very bright and funny.
In general, Stevenson’s adventure story turned into a real boredom. It is very sad.
Maybe I am very old for children’s performances and judge too harshly. Maybe kids like it but while standing in the line at the cloakroom after all 3 performances I heard kids telling their parents it was boring.
I hope that other English plays at other theaters are more interesting. For example, at the Theatre for Young Spectators you can see “Peter Pan” by J. Barry and “Happy Prince” by O. Wilde. "The Magic Lamp" Theatre shows “The Cat That Walks by Himself” by R. Kipling and “Et cetera” Theatre presents “The Star Child” by O. Wilde.
Nowadays the most popular English playwrights are Martin McDonagh and Michael Frayn. Their contribution to the development of the drama is truly invaluable, and their plays, such as “Noises Off”, “The Cripple of Inishmaan”, “Copenhagen” are staged all around the world and have collected a lot of honorable awards.
The term “noises off” means sounds made offstage to be heard by the audience of a play” (Oxford Dictionary)
“Noises Off” (1982) is a play by an English playwright Michael Frayn. The idea for it came in 1970, when Frayn was watching from the wings a performance of “The Two of Us”, a farce that he had written for Lynn Redgrave.
He said, “It was funnier from behind than in front, and I thought that one day I must write a farce from behind.“
The prototype, a short-lived one-act play called “Exits”, was written and performed in 1977. At the request of his associate, Michael Codron, Frayn expanded this into what would become “Noises Off”. It takes its title from the theatrical stage direction indicating sounds coming from offstage.
“Noises Off” is a play within a play. It is about an ambitious director and his troupe of mediocre actors. The cast and crew together are putting up a silly sex comedy titled “Nothing On” – a single-set farce in which lovers frolic, doors slam and clothes are tossed away.
The three acts of “Noises Off” different phases of the disastrous show “Nothing On” expose:
Act One: On stage during dress rehearsal.
Act Two: Backstage during a matinee performance.
Act Three: On stage during a delightfully ruined performance.
Today this performance can be seen at the Mossovet State Academic Theatre. This theatre is one of the oldest theatres of Moscow, opened in 1923, by the theatre entrepreneur S. Prokofiev, first as the Theatre of Moscow Provincial Council of Trade Unions. “Noises Off” is one of the most popular plays staged there.

The audience appreciate the fact of being involved into the process of the play – one of the main characters appears among the audience the first 10–15 minutes of the play and that impresses strongly!
There are very mixed comments on the official theatre’s website. But I'm sure every person with a good sense of humor will like the show.
“The Cripple of Inishmaan”
Inishmaan (Irish: Inis Meáin, the official name, formerly spelled Inis Meadhóin, meaning “middle island”) is the middle of the three main Aran Islands in Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland (Wikipedia)
“The Cripple of Inishmaan” is a dark comedy by Martin McDonagh who links the story to the real life filming of the documentary Man of Aran.
The play is set on the small Aran Islands community of Inis Meáin off the Western Coast of Ireland in 1934. The inhabitants are excited to learn of a Hollywood film crew’s arrival in neighbouring Inis Mór to make a documentary about the life on the islands. “Cripple” Billy Claven, eager to escape the gossip, poverty and boredom of Inishmaan, vies for a part in the film, and to everyone’s surprise, the orphan and outcast gets his chance.
“The Cripple of Inishmaan” opened on 12 December 1996 at the Royal National Theatre (Cottesloe) in London. In 1998, it opened at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York City, again with Ruaidhri Conroy in the star role. In the same year, Frederick Koehler played Billy in Los Angeles. In December 2008, “The Cripple of Inishmaan” was produced in New York City by the Atlantic Theater Company in conjunction with The Druid Theatre Company of Galway, Ireland.
In 2013 the play returned to the West End, with Daniel Radcliffe playing Cripple Billy.

Today in Russia “The Cripple of Inishmaan” is staged at the Taganka Theatre. The Taganka Theatre is the theatre which is located in the Art Nouveau building on Taganka Square in Moscow. The theatre was founded in 1964 by Y. Lyubimov and continued the traditions of his alma mater, the Vakhtangov Theatre, while also exploring the possibilities of Bertolt Brecht’s "epic theatre".
A lot of people left the enthusiastic comments about this play (the Taganka Theatre’s official website) which was directed by a famous producer S. Fedotov. This performance is almost a complete copy of the original because the classical version obviously does not need additions. We had pleasure of seeing it twice and the entire cast was excellent.

On the whole, the modern drama looks fresh in comparison with classical plays and performances. There is a lot of new ideas and new ways for being realized so sometimes it can look even strange but all in all it is really interesting and original.

N 1 Прерафаэлиты: викторианский авангард (выставка)

"Прерафаэлиты: викторианский авангард" открылась в галерее Тейт Бритен (Tate Britain) в Лондоне в 2012 г. и стала одной из самых популярных выставок за всю историю галереи. Ее кураторами были Э. Смит (главный хранитель Отдела британского искусства до 1900 г.), Т. Бэрринджер (профессор истории искусств Йельского университета) и Дж. Розенфельд (профессор истории искусств колледжа Мэримаунт в Манхеттене, Нью-Йорк), которые готовили выставку около пяти лет. Предложение привезти прерафаэлитов в Москву первой высказала директор ГМИИ им. А.С. Пушкина И. Антонова в 2008 г., а в ноябре 2011 в Москве было подписано Соглашение о выставке, ознаменовавшее начало работы.

Джейн Мак Адам Фрейд – дочь известнейшего английского художника Люсьена Фрейда (1922–2011) и правнучка Зигмунда Фрейда, – разносторонняя и талантливая художница, скульптор и медальер с мировым именем. Ее работы рано получили признание – свою первую персональную выставку она провела в возрасте восемнадцати лет. С тех пор произведения Джейн Мак Адам Фрейд регулярно выставляются в музеях, галереях и институтах по всему миру. Ее работы – гордость многих крупных музейных коллекций: Британского музея, Государственных музеев Берлина, Национальной галереи Греции, Галереи национального архива в Лондоне, в Музее Виктории и Альберта они находятся в постоянной экспозиции.

The exhibition “Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde”
This summer at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts there was located the reduced version of the British hit of the year 2012 from the Tate Britain, the exhibition Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde. Being presented only in 80 items (in comparison with Tate’s 200), still for the first time in Russia the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’s works have been displayed on such a large scale.
My own interest in the Pre-Raphaelites had arisen a couple of years ago after the reading of the article about one of the movement’s founders Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his muses. So having got a desired ticket I started to thread my way through not the little crowd, I must note. And it was in the weekday’s morning. The exhibition occupied three rooms and brought together works in different techniques including painting, sculpture and the applied arts. Though the tablets next to the paintings might supply you with the main information about the canvas still they were placed inconveniently and soon I regretted about not hiring an audio-guide. Often the artists, paintings and plots are barely familiar to us so it is worth making up a catalogue with a good overview but there wasn’t this one or maybe I just didn't find it. Without it, leaving the museum people still don’t get, why there is the word Avant-Garde in the title of the exhibition and what the link is between the Pre-Raphaelites and the Middle Ages and Renaissance. A nice bonus was the division of all pieces into 6 sections of a specific topic to help unprepared public not to get lost among the works. But that was all the assistance, in fact.
Throwing a little criticism of some organizational points off, you find yourself standing in front of the paintings of the great masters. The rich, deep colors, the highest detailing and the peculiar tender warmth, coming from the canvas. It was very interesting to discover many pictures on the literary and historical motives. On the whole the exhibition made a very strong positive impression on me. And there are only two words left about the PRB (Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood) – pleasure and delight.
The exhibition “Dreaming and Doing. Medals of Jane McAdam Freud”
After visiting the Pre-Raphaelites we looked in the Department of Private Collections of the Museum which housed the exhibition of the modern English sculptor and medallist Jane McAdam Freud, great-granddaughter of the legendary psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. A small but informative exhibition brings back to the ideas of the American publicist Ayn Rand. Full of mysteries, images are accompanied by the author’s annotations, narrowing the circle of symbolic interpretations. But, without certain training it will be difficult to appreciate the subject of McAdam's research and her ideas. For the average man her medals are just beautiful and have all the expressive possibilities of the sculpture. It is not surprising that each of them is exposed individually so that you can examine both sides. An aesthetic pleasure and the rest, so to say, only for professionals.

N 1. 2014 is the UK-year-of-culture in Russia. So as to exchange "personal" peculiarities between two countries, there were organized many exhibitions to visit and a lot of interesting things to see. One of these places was Pushkin’s Museum. There was an exhibition of Pre-Raphaelites where were displayed many magnificent and fabulous paintings of that epoch.
So, there is a little entrance, common information to know: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (also known as the Pre-Raphaelites) was a group of English painters, poets, and critics, founded in 1848. The group's intention was to reform art by rejecting what it considered the mechanistic approach first adopted by Mannerist artists who succeeded Raphael and Michelangelo.
All paintings were written in very bright, glaring, gaudy and rich colors. Most of all I liked April Love - a painting by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes which was created between 1855 and 1856. It was first exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1856. And now, in 2014, it’s shown at Pushkin's Museum in Moscow.
It shows a distinctly Pre-Raphaelite style in which a soft approach to nature and feminity is found. Bright colors and red-haired woman as well as an emphasis on nature. The model for the principal figure was Tryphena Ford, whom Hughes married in 1855.
On this painting we can see a young couple at a moment of emotional crisis. The male figure is barely visible, his head bent over the young woman's left hand. Girl is looking down at fallen blossoms, meaning the end of spring, symbol of early and young love. All details are written properly, so it gives this picture an effect of liveliness.
This exhibition presents many characteristics of England, its culture, manner of drawing and their seeing of Art. To sum it up, I can say that all pictures gave me a lot of emotions, memories and thoughts.

At the weekend I visited two exhibitions dedicated to the year of Great Britain in Russia. There were the exhibition of Pre-Raphaelites organized in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, and the Exhibition "Dreamings and Doings: Jane MсАdam Freud's medals".
N 1. In the middle of the 19th century in 1848 there was a brotherhood of Pre-Raphaelites. At the same time the photographers came up. Rodger Fenton was the first, who made his own photos of the Crimea war, and it was he who influenced the work of the Pre-Raphaelites, primarily the way of landscape.
I spent a long time at the exhibitions, and I tried to examine the pictures in detail. The most impressive pictures for me were two works, and the first of them was the picture of John Everett Millais which is called “Ophelia”. This is one of the most popular paintings. Ophelia is a character from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, singing before she drowns in a river. It fascinated me.
The second was painted by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope and is called “Thought of the past”. There is a fancy woman in a rundown room and in a frumpy bathrobe. These poor surroundings highlight the beauty of the woman’s eyes full of remorse.
The exhibition made a wonderful impression, and I'd like to see it at least once more if it arrived in Moscow.
N 2. Jane McAdam Freud's exhibition “Dreaming and Doing” was held in the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts from July 16 till October 13 2013, in partnership with the gallery, Gazelli Art House and presented 21 medals of the sculptors.
The medals of J. McAdam Freud were inspired by her concerns; they are the result of the analysis of the man's inner world. One of the works, which I enjoyed most was the medal “Forked eye”, about inability of people to look at the problem from a new point. To commemorate the 11th September medal called a “moment of silence” was exhibited.
As you know each medal has 2 sides, also it was very pleasant that it was possible to look at both sides of each medal. Unfortunately, the medals on display were few.
Jane McAdam Freyd's exhibition is an excellent opportunity not only to see art in its small manifestations, but also to analyze your own Dreaming and Doings.
